Transforming Public Spaces Through Intelligent Custom Design

Posted on ––

When your project demands more than off-the-shelf solutions, the difference between ordinary streetscapes and extraordinary public spaces lies in design intelligence. For over three decades, Street + Garden has partnered with leading landscape architects, councils and developers across Australia to create bespoke street furniture that doesn’t just fill space – it defines place.

Our collaborative design process transforms functional requirements into compelling civic assets. Every custom piece we deliver reflects deep site analysis, community needs assessment, and material expertise that ensures longevity in Australia’s demanding climate conditions.

Proven Expertise Across Diverse Contexts

Miles, QLD – Cultural Resonance Through Form

When Miles required town centre revitalisation, we didn’t simply provide seating – we created a narrative. Our custom suite, developed with award winning landscape architecture studio, Vee Design, draws directly from the region’s iconic bottle trees. With inspiration being drawn from the area’s iconic bottle-tree landscapes: the steel frames of the custom furniture were shaped to mimic the trees’ bulbous trunks, finished in earthy bronze to complement spotted-gum timber tops. This site-specific range – including benches, stools, tables and bin enclosures – adds visual interest while respecting the rural context. By CNC-machining gentle curves into the timber slats and laser-cutting frames from minimal material, each piece stays elegant yet durable. Such sustainable detailing also minimizes waste in production, showing that environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand with artistic design. In Miles, these custom elements play a key role in creating connection within the community, linking modern streetscape to local heritage. The curated design of this custom furniture solution has been recognised with a Good Design Award and a SIT Furniture Design Award honourable mention.

Denman Prospect, ACT – Contemporary Social Infrastructure

When approached by Redbox Design Group to develop custom furniture for Denman Prospect – we transformed their conceptual vision into a fully realised custom suite that reflects the precinct’s progressive architectural character. Our solution centred on incremental panel transitions, where each curved rubberwood ply element subtly shifts in geometry along the bench length, creating fluid sculptural forms that invite varied user interactions.
The holistic approach extended across custom bike racks, bins and bollards, incorporating rubberwood elements alongside stainless steel and precast concrete to establish a sophisticated material language. The furniture suite has become a defining feature of the development’s heart, generating the social activity and visual distinction that positions Denman Prospect as a benchmark for contemporary suburban design. This project’s design excellence was recognised with a Good Design Award, validating our collaborative approach to creating community-shaping infrastructure.

Paradise Lakes, QLD – Strategic Placemaking Through Signature Elements

At the Paradise Lakes estate in Willawong, Street + Garden designed and delivered a sculptural entry statement that acts as both signage and community landmark. Working alongside Urbis, we were tasked with conceptualising a freestanding object that expressed the estate’s lakeside identity and evolving brand through striking form and high-end finishes. The result is a visually impactful structure shaped by softly waved metal profiles and a colour gradient that subtly references the wetland landscape.

To deepen this connection, the brand’s motif was laser cut into the surface at varying scales, enhancing a sense of visual movement while anchoring the piece to its environment. A custom automotive paint finish– flecked with metallic gold – brings richness and visibility, especially under night lighting, where internal illumination and perimeter point lights amplify the form’s presence. This entry feature blends sculptural art with functional placemaking, using materiality, form and light to capture both the site’s natural rhythm and community ambition.

This project demonstrates how strategic custom design can create a powerful first impression. By integrating brand storytelling, environmental reference and technical expertise, we transformed a simple entry point into a lasting statement of identity and intent. The design excellence of this project was recognised with a SIT Furniture Design Award honourable mention.
